Case history: disc problems

Michael

Michael's back problem came on when he bent down to pick up a tennis ball; like many people, he couldn't believe that something so simple could cause such a long term problem.

Michael had experienced the problem for about ten weeks when he first saw Chris, but to make matters far worse he had also just fallen down the stairs.

"I have always been a fit individual and this condition left me very low and down. Chris was very honest that there was no miracle cure, and it could go on for three or four months, but the biggest comfort I got from him was that he told me it would get better. When you are low this is all you want to hear."

Chris found that Michael had strained one of the discs at the bottom of his back - a common problem, which must be carefully managed, as they can sometimes be unpredictable in recovery. This was the case with Michael, who experienced two steps forward and one back, and treatment was needed over a few months.

"I feel so much better than I did when I first came to see Chris, but I do have to remember I am not a kid anymore! I am now back to the sporting activities I like, and am able to enjoy the rough and tumble that having two young children inevitably entails."

An appropriate approach is especially important when treating over a period of time as it can involve significant periods of time off work, which can present many challenges. Part of the osteopath's role is to provide a point of contact who can help to guide, advise and treat through the uncertainties.

"The biggest plus for me has been the reassurance on the road to recovery that Chris offers."
