Treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome during pregnancy osteopathy case studies from Sheffield, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire
Katie
Katie was diagnosed with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome by her midwife during her second pregnancy; she was always dropping things and had numbness and pain in both hands, along with pins and needles. Her midwife recommended she wear a support on her wrist which Katie found didn't really help very much.
"I was feeling a bit pathetic so I started looking on the internet to find a solution; the only thing that seemed to work was osteopathy. Then I came across Mandy through my antenatal yoga group and she was also recommended by a friend".
Osteopath Mandy Redmond explains, "During pregnancy the weight of the growing baby causes changes in posture. In Katie's case the normal curves in her spine had increased. This resulted in lower back pain, and also meant that the nerves that lead to her hand were compressed, causing pain, numbness and pins and needles; a kind of 'sciatica' in her hands".
Treatment was aimed at helping Katie's spine adapt more comfortably to pregnancy, and at relieving the areas where her nerves were compressed.
"Overall the treatment was fantastic. It didn't cure the original problem as such, but it did help me to cope a lot better; the pain and the numbness were gone and I just had pins and needles. Mandy also managed to sort out my back and neck problems, which to be honest I thought I couldn't do anything about."
Katie also felt it was worth coming to see Mandy as her pelvis was more balanced and generally she felt a lot better after the treatments. Carrying such a large baby - Phoebe was 9lb 15oz at birth - takes its toll on the body and the osteopathic treatment that Katie received made her last trimester much more bearable.
As for the process itself, Katie found Mandy to be thorough and very approachable, "It's quite daunting standing semi-naked in front of someone when you're heavily pregnant, but to be honest I wasn't nervous or embarrassed at all which is a real testament to Mandy. I found The Osteopathic Practice to be a very relaxed and friendly place, and the treatment was invaluable; I just wish I'd done it with my first pregnancy too!"
