Treatment for rib pain during pregnancy osteopathy case studies from Sheffield, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire
Lisa
When Lisa was seven months pregnant she started to experience a darting pain from her ribs to her throat that was coming about every 30 minutes. As a result, she became quite stiff from holding herself with so much tension. Having been treated by Mandy previously, Lisa decided to come back for further treatment.
"Mandy quickly uncovered what the problem was - I had one rib higher than the others which was causing an imbalance, which in turn was causing the pain".
Osteopath Mandy Redmond explains, "During pregnancy old problems can rear their ugly heads. Lisa had an old rib problem which was put under strain by the growing baby pushing her middle upwards and outwards. Coupled with her body's need for increased oxygen, Lisa's rib cage struggled to cope with the extra demands put on it. Her body was trying to protect the rib by tightening all the muscles around it, causing her pain."
In this case, Mandy's treatment was aimed at resolving the old problem and relaxing the muscles protecting Lisa's rib.
Lisa says "Mandy simply got on with the job in hand and did it! I was a bit sore the next day following the treatment but after that the relief lasted on average for two weeks before the pain returned."
Lisa continued to receive treatment from Mandy every two weeks to help her enjoy the remainder of her pregnancy.
