Treatment for side pain during pregnancy osteopathy case studies from Sheffield, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire

Katie

Katie was 34 weeks pregnant when she first came to see Mandy. She was having pain in her right hand side which she thought was simply a very bad stitch. It came on quite suddenly and left Katie feeling really poorly and quite sick.

"I put a warm lavender sack on the painful area at first which seemed to help a bit but then it got much worse and I really struggled to even walk; in fact I could only waddle!"

Katie had just started pregnancy yoga classes and her teacher suggested she speak to Mandy to see whether she could help. Katie's midwife had referred her to hospital for physiotherapy, but it was a couple of weeks before she was able to get an appointment.

In the meantime, the pain became unbearable, "I tried to hold on until my hospital appointment, but simply couldn't wait; I was in too much pain so I rang the Practice and booked in to see Mandy".

Mandy explains, "During pregnancy the rib cage expands to accommodate the growing baby and organs in the abdomen. In Katie's case her rib cage wasn't expanding enough, placing strain on her joints in that area. The muscles around the joints were working hard to protect them, but the combination of strained joints and tired muscles was causing Katie a lot of pain".

Mandy focused her treatment on helping Katie's rib cage to expand and relieve the pressure on the strained joins and tired muscles.

After her first treatment, Mandy advised Katie that she might feel worse for a couple of days and this was what happened. After that, the pain was less sharp and much less intense. Katie had four sessions in all with Mandy and by the last session the pain had totally gone.

Katie says "The treatment I had with Mandy was just fab; so fab in fact that I told my Mum who then came to see Mandy for treatment too. Actually, my advice to anyone in a similar situation would be to book in. The Practice is so relaxed, homely and very professional; a really nice place to come to".

Before her treatment, Katie had hoped that she would not go full term with her pregnancy as she was in such a lot of pain and discomfort; in the end her daughter was born a week late and both Mum and baby are really well.
